Photoshop Crash on Launch

On Mac OS X, Adobe Photoshop versions 7 and 8 (CS) will crash on launch if you have global font smoothing (antialiasing) set below 8.

I’m just writing this because I spent literally a month reinstalling, scouring the web for answers, and trying every kind of hack or trick to get Photoshop to run on my computer. What should have appeared is a dialog box saying, “Photoshop will not run with Font Smoothing set below 8 points. To fix this, blah blah…”.

Instead, it bounced a few times, then crashed:

Command: Adobe Photoshop CS
Path: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS/Adobe Photoshop CS.app/
         Contents/MacOSClassic/Adobe Photoshop CS

Less than useful. Hopefully Google will cache this and save some other poor soul a load of torment.

ok, im wondering if this is the same problem im having.

randomly today i went to open photoshop, and RIGHT when everything loads and the splash screen dissapears, the program just closes.

im getting really frustrated cause i have work to do with deadlines that i need photoshop for.

is this the same thing that happend to you? how do i fix this!

This could be anything, really: Maybe you have a corrupt font that Photoshop doesn’t like. Photoshop doesn’t handle case-sensitive file systems very well… if you reformatted your hard drive using Tiger and selected “Case-sensitive HFS+”, you need to reformat it with the default setting. You could try trashing your prefs or making sure your permissions on all your directories are correct. Try creating a new user account and launching Photoshop from there. If it doesn’t work, you probably have to uninstall, then reinstall the app.

OMG. I have been beating myself to death for weeks trying to figure out why Photoshop CS kept crashing — I had set antialiasing to something like 2 pt because of some weirdness with font antialiasing in Safari’s built in SVG (it checks for and applies antialiasing before scaling the SVG).

    THANK YOU!

BTW, the trial version of Photoshop CS3 exhibits the same behavior!
